Come challenge yourself at Mt. Longonot. Why? You do not need a reason to stay fit. Located approximately 60 kilometers from the capital city of Nairobi, Mt. Longonot hike is a popular escape for outdoorers seeking fun and adventure. At the very basic level, hiking to its rim provides a fitness challenge, with the reward of a spectacular view across the Rift Valley.
The entire Mt. Longonot hike takes 4-6 hours. The 3.1-kilometer trail up the mountain from the gate to the rim of the crater takes 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on one’s competence. Once you reach the rim, you have the choice to descend or hike all the way around the crater. This adds some 7.2 km to the hike. A trek around the rim typically takes 2-3 hours. Mt Longonot hike presents a good challenge for everyone, kids, beginners, and advanced hikers alike.
Itinerary Overview:
We’ll kick off with an early morning departure from Nairobi, heading towards Mt. Longonot National Park. As we leave the city behind, the scenery transforms, leading us to this breathtaking volcanic crater.

5:00 a.m. – Meet-up at International House, Opposite Hilton Hotel

5:30 a.m. – Departure for Mt. Longonot National Park

7:30 a.m. – Arrival at Mt. Longonot National Park

8:00 a.m. – Hike begins

1:00 p.m. – Mandatory turn-back and descent

4:30 p.m. – Departure for Nairobi

What to Carry
- Comfortable hiking boots
- Long Pants and Long sleeved top/light jacket recommended
- Hydration backpack / Water Bottles (we will provide drinking water and snacks)
- Day Pack /Small Bag to carry your personal items
- Sunhat, Sunscreen, Sunglasses
- Rain Gear in case it rains
- Any personal medication
- An identification card or passport
